WILLIAM W. BELKNAP (1829 - 1890) Union brigadier general and Secretary of War in Grant's administration; impeached by the Senate for accepting bribes from Indian posts. Scarce A.L.S. "Wm. W. Belknap, Secretary of War" 1p., 4to. Keokuk, Nov. 15, 1872, to his friend and comrade in arms Genl. Thomas J. Wood, just after learning that he will be returning to his office as Secretary of War with the landslide re-election of U.S. Grant on November 2, 1872. In part: "...It is with sincere regret that I am compelled to decline the invitation so kindly extended to me, to attend the annual meeting & re-union of the Society of the Army of the Cumberland. The chain of personal friendship, between members of these associations, lengthens, as time passes away, but becomes more and more strong...". Near fine.
