Sale 38 Lot 232

WILLIAM B. RENSHAW Civil War Commodore, killed in 1863 at the Battle of Galveston while attempting to explode his ship. Evidently, the charges he set exploded prematurely, taking the lives of his entire crew. Important war-date A.L.S. 4pp. 8vo., New York, "Union Club", May 22, 1861, assuring his captain of his loyalty, in part: "...Although I fully understand that, in the event of anything occurring, I am subject to your...I am convinced the precautions you have taken, to guard against an attack, would not have been made by you, unless...well-grounded suspicions were entertained that an organization for such an attack existed....I am convinced you will understand the spirit...I am an Officer of the United States...". Tape remains to borders, otherwise very good condition.
