WILBURN HILL KINGFought for the Confederacy during the Civil War, enlisting in 1862 as a private in the 18th Texas Infantry. Hill was quickly promoted to field officer rank, eventually helping command the Trans-Mississippi department as Brigadier General. Attractive S.P "W.H. King" on verso, Austin, [n.d. but postbellum], a cabinet card by photographer S.B. Hill of Austin depicting Hill in side view bust pose. Hill helped command Western CSA regiments late in the war when the West was largely cut off from communication with Richmond, and then fled to Mexico when the Confederacy collapsed. Upon his return to Texas, he eventually entered into politics, serving as a state representative from 1875-1881 and adjutant general of Texas from 1881-1891. This photograph was likely taken during that time, as S.B. Hill contracted the majority of Texas government photographs. Includes a provenance to Confederate general and Civil War historian Marcus Wright in the form of a pencil inscription on verso. Very good.
Estimate $ 250-350
