WHISKEY REBELLION SOLDIER SEEKS LENIENCY FOR HIS WHISKEY-SELLING WIFE! Fine content and quite ironic A.D.S., 1p. legal folio, [Maryland], Jan. 20, 1795 in which a soldier who fought to repress the Whiskey Rebellion seeks leniency for his wife who had illegally sold whiskey in his absence! In this petition to Maryland Gov. John Hoskins, Jacob Cable notes: "...Your Petitioner was drafted to go against the Insurgents and during his absence Rebecca Cable your Petitioner's Wife sold liquor for the Support of her family to wit 3 small Children...your Pet'r was presented for selling liquors without license and was fined 600 [?] of Tob[acc]o for said offense...your Petitioner therefore prays...that the said fine may be remitted and your Pet'r will ever pray &c...". Margins a bit ragged with a few fold splits repaired on verso, otherwise very good. Soldiers answering calls to service to repress the unpopular Whiskey Rebellion were in many cases in the field for extensive periods of time, leaving their families very suddenly without support.
Estimate $ 500-700
