"WE WILL REVENGE HIS DEATH..." A fine content Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to. in pencil, Macon R. R., Ga., Aug. 10, 1864, in which Pvt. Erastus Winters of the 50th Ohio, later a prisoner at Cahawba and a survivor of the Sultana disaster, describes his recent combat experiences. In part:"...Day before yesterday our regiment was thrown out as skirmishers charged and droved the rebels back about 2 miles Colonel Elsner was gallantly leading us forward when he fell dead pierced through the head by a rebel Minnie Ball there was hardly a man in the regiment but what shed tears when they heard he was killed the boys all thought a great deal of him and we will revenge his death should we get the chance...There has been two more men wounded in our company ...both wounded in the hands, Bristoe by a shell and Carson by a Minnie Ball...Our brigade has just finished the 33rd line of Breastworks since this campaign so you see we have been pretty busy...". A bit light in places, else very good.
