ULYSSES S. GRANTFine association A.E.S. as President, penned on the verso of an A.L.S. to Grant by Rep. JOHN COBURN, 2pp. 4to., Indianapolis, Aug. 3, 1872. From 1861 to 1864, Coburn was colonel of the 33rd Indiana Reg. and was brevetted a brigadier general in 1865, then served four terms in the House of Representatives. Coburn angrily defends his old comrade: "...I have seen & heard the charge made by Democratic Speakers...that you vetoed some pension bill of the widow of a soldier...Please let me know what the case is...You are fought on these petty things, and I want the club to kill off this one...". On the blank verso Grant notes: "Respectfully referr'd to the Sec. of the Int. for his answer to Mr. Coburn. I do not recollect the circumstances. U.S. Grant". Lightly toned with a fold through one line of text, else very good.
Estimate $ 700-900
