Sale 38 Lot 185

ULYSSES S. GRANTSigned endorsement on the verso of the text of a telegram (in another hand) sent to him by Union Brig. Gen. NEWTON M. CURTIS on War Dept. Military Telegraph form, 1p. 4to., from Richmond, July 11, 1865. Curtis' telegram was sent to Grant's aide, Bvt. Gen. Theodore S. Bowers. An angry Curtis writes: "...Maj. Gen. [Alfred] Terry telegraphed five days since for an order assigning me to duty according to my brevet rank...the command to which he wishes to assign is now commanded by a Colonel & Bvt. Br. Gen. whose assignment is of a date prior to my appointment as Brig. Gen. Will you please inform me...whether such an order is or will be issued...". On the verso Lt. Gen. Grant endorses the request: "Respectfully forwarded to the Secretary of War, with the recommendation that Brevet Maj. Gen. N. M. Curtis be assigned to duty with his Brevet rank. U.S. Grant Lieut. Gen. Hd. Qrs. A.U.S. July 11, 1865". Immediately beneath Grant's endorsement is an A.E.S. of Secretary of War EDWIN M. STANTON: "Approved. Adjt. Genl. Will issue order. E. M. Stanton". Tipped to a mat, near fine condition. No doubt Grant remembered Curtis' fine service under him at Cold Harbor.
