Sale 38 Lot 387

One of the most oddball pieces we've encountered, a signed photo, 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" b/w, a printed photograph of a Union soldier signed by her (!) at bottom: "Albert D. J. Cashier Taken Nov. 1864". A light vertical crease and toned spot near bottom, else very good. The photo is accompanied by a ca. 1915 newspaper clipping titled: "FIND OLD SOLDIER IS JUST A WOMEN...Sex of Inmate of Illinois Veterans' Home Discovered by an Accident...POSES AS MAN FOR 50 YEARS". The story explains how Cashier served in the Union army for three years and was discovered only when attendants had undressed her for bathing. She originally had donned clothing as a young girl in order to obtain passage from Ireland to the U.S., then enlisted as a member of the 95th Illinois and survived as one of only a handful of the regiment's original enlistees.
