THOMAS SUMTER (1734 - 1832) "Carolina Gamecock" Revolutionary War partisan leader who led numerous guerilla operations against Cornwallis' forces in the Carolinas. Rare manuscript D.S. "Thos. Sumter", 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], Aug. 14, 1783, his sworn statement in a lawsuit against one Caleb Gayle in which Sumter swears that: "...Gayle is justly indebted to him in the Sum of Eighty Eight Spanish Milled Dollars...". Small seal stain at upper-left, else bears a large, bold signature and in overall very good to fine condition.
