Sale 38 Lot 461

THE LIBERATOR A fascinating collection of issues from William Lloyd Garrison's The Liberator, the Boston-based weekly publication notorious for the uncompromising immediate slave emancipation stance it took decades before the notion became popular. The lot includes issue no. 17 from The Liberator's first volume, 4pp., folio, Boston, April 23, 1831, bearing the motto "OUR COUNTRY IS THE WORLD OUR COUNTRYMEN ARE MANKIND" beneath the paper's title. The remaining issues are from volume three, published in 1833, and include: January 5, 1833, January 12, 1833, May 25, 1833, October 26, 1833 and December 28, 1833. Though the paper had a relatively low circulation of 3,000 subscriptions based mostly in the Northeast, its unceasing editorial content was spoken of nationally, and even punishable by fine in South Carolina. The six-issue collection is very good overall, with moderate folds showing slight tears and moderate foxing throughout, still highly readable.
Estimate $ 300-400
