THADDEUS S. C. LOWE(1832-1913) American balloonist whose Union balloon corps tracked enemy movements, most notably at Fair Oaks where observations directed artillery and prevented a Union rout. Uncommon invention-related A.L.S. "T. S. C. Lowe", 2pp. 8vo., New York, Jan. 2, 1868, to his partner James T. Ames, about investors, money problems and growing interest in his ice compression machines for ships. In part: "...I did not effect my object with Mr. Ewing...but he thought he could arrange it [undoubtedly a business loan]...I am also going to call on boath [sic] Gov. [of Connecticut, James E.] English & [Marshall] Jewell again on Monday...Mr. Ewing received letters from Henry which are very favorable indeed, quite the reverse of what you supposed. He finds plenty of openings for ice works...". Very good condition. Lowe was continuing to experiment with refrigeration techniques and still seeking financing and venues at this time to further market his machine aboard steamships.
Estimate $ 500-600
