TEXAS WAR OF INDEPENDENCE PAY VOUCHER Early Texas War of Independence partly-printed D.S., a pay voucher, 1p. oblong 8vo., Columbia, TX, Nov. 4, 1836, paying Charles String $24.00 for three months' service in the "Texas Army", and endorsed by acting paymaster general signed GEORGE WASHINGTON POE (1800-1844), with String's attorney signing for him on verso. Poe was a close friend of Sam Houston and fought throughout Texas War for Independence. He was later appointed acting paymaster general on Oct. 12, 1836 and charged with establishing a pay department for the Army of the Republic of Texas, which he based on that of the United States Army. Usual toning, else very good.
