TEXAS SUPPORTS LOUISIANA'S RESISTANCE TO FEDERAL AUTHORITY Unusual D.S. 1p. 4to., Austin, Apr. 6, 1875, signed by Texas Secretary of State A. W. DeBirney, in which the State of Texas expresses its ardent and unwavering support for the State of Louisiana's fierce resistance to the Reconstruction government. In Louisiana, the extent of the excesses of carpetbag rule had been so excessive that even northern newspapers were speaking out against them. In 1875, the radical Georgia Secretary of the Legislature had been led to his seat by armed soldiers with fixed bayonets, and the Democratic members of the state legislature, in protest of fraudulent vote counting, had left the chambers and gone elsewhere to form their own government. In this document, the Texas Legislature expressed: "...profound appreciation of the spirited indignation expressed by the advocates of freedom and the Constitutional government throughout the nation irrespective of political parties, at the outrage lately perpetrated in Louisiana by the present Federal Administration upon...the honor and rights of the states, and joins in the national protest against the prostitution of the United States Army to the illegal purpose of making War upon a state of the Union...". This fiery and provocative statement is signed in type by the Governor, the President of the Senate, and the Speaker of the House. Repaired marginal tear, edge wear, else very good.
