SURVEYING THE WESTERN BOUNDARY OF PENNSYLANIA A fascinating collection of three documents relating to the surveying of western Pennsylvania including a manuscript D.S. "Stephen Porter" 3pp. legal folio, Philadelphia, Aug. 25, 1783 "...In Pursuance of a Commission under my Hand & Seal of Office....I John Lukens Surveyor General of the State of Pennsylvania have deputed be Surveyor of Two Miles in breadth on the most Western side of District No. 3 Situate on the North Side of the River Ohio, being part of the land first described in the law entitled 'An Act for the Sale of Certain Lands therein mentioned for the purpose of Redeeming & paying of the Certificates of Depreciation given to the Officers & Solders of the Pennsylvania line or their be divided off to them severally at the end of the War.'...". The document continues detailing specific instructions, that read, in part: "...Go on to Survey all lands upon the Ohio River & large Creeks laying them off four times as deep as they are in breadth on said River if the Ground will admit thereof - When the lands are rich let the Lots be of the smallest size - keeping, as near as possible the lines of said Surveys in an East & West- North & South directions...In order to encourage the Sale of Sd. Lots & prevent future disputes after are to have the Boundary lines distinctly & strongly mark'd...that you leave no land unsurvey'd unless it be perfectly Mountaneous [sic] & Rocky - And even there, some of the Northern or four Miles Lines are to be extended across the Mountains or Ridges in order to begin on the Northern side of the Ridge or Ridges in the same direction..." Together with a copy of Surveyor General John Lukens' appointment of Porter, 1p. legal folio, Philadelphia, Aug. 25, 1783. Also including a copy of John Lukens' instructions to Stephen Porter, 1p. oblong 8vo., Philadelphia, Mar. 5, 1785, noting by "...A commission under my hand & seal of Office, dated the 25th August 1783 you were appointed to Survey a certain part of that land on the North side of the River Ohio, Appropriated by law to the redemption of the Depreciation Certificates given to the Pennsa. Line. I do hereby declare the said Commission or appointment to be void & of none effect and have Appointed Nathan Breading to the said District by whose appointment you are to be consider yourself as superseded & govern yourself accordingly...". Usual folds, some marginal toning and wear, else very good condition. Together, three pieces.
