Sale 38 Lot 157

SIMON BOLIVARBUCKNER (1823 - 1914) Confederate major general who led his division at Perryville, Knoxville, and in an abortive support of forces in the Trans- Mississippi. Boldly signed by Buckner at bottom and countersigned by Captain ISAAC SHELBY. This accounting took place in the field during the battles of CSA Lt. General James Longstreet's Knoxville Campaign. Buckner famously capitulated to Ulysses S Grant's demand for unconditional surrender after the Confederate's February, 1862 loss at Fort Donelson, Buckner's first meeting with his old West Point chum Grant since he had loaned Grant train fare a decade earlier. Buckner was imprisoned by Union troops until his exchange for General George McCall, after which he was immediately promoted to Major General and continued fighting for the CSA. Matted with a facsimile photograph and a 4 1/2" x 3 1/2" brass plate on a 19 1/2" x 16" maroon cardboard. Fine.
Estimate $ 400-500
