SHORTAGE OF SOLDIERS FOR SLAVE RUNAWAY PATROLS Good content A.L.S., 2pp. legal folio, St. Georges, SC to Gov. Milledge Luke Bonham concerning the temporary disbanding of the 18th Regt. of S.C. Militia. In part: "...The citizens of St. Georges within the limits of the 18th Regiment S. C.M. are second to none in can be proved from the number of her sons in action in the Army of the Confederacy in Virginia, in Mississippi and on our Coast, and in a most excellent Company lately formed under your Excellency's call...notwithstanding 250 of her citizens are now encamped in Summerville draining her completely of all males between 16 and 60...they feel that they have been made [to] suffer more than is just and misrepresented (?) facts...The detail daily for guard duty at the Hospitals is 55 rank and file (?) and the detail for [slave] Patrol of 84, a total of 139 daily on duty...The composition of the Patrol is by using such men as were sent to their respective Beats...The composition of the Patrol is by using such men as were sent to their respective Beats for their ability to bear Camp duties...".
