Sale 38 Lot 97

SEIZED LOYALIST PROPERTY IS CONVEYED Intriguing D.S., 1p. folio parchment, Philadelphia, Jan. 15, 1789, in which property seized by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania from a loyalist is formally conveyed to his wife's son, apparently from another marriage. It reads in part: "...Samuel and Rebecca Shoemaker, by virtue of sundry conveyances in the Law, were on the Fourth day of July 1776 seized of an Estate for life...confiscated to the use of the Commonwealth...". Signed by both Shoemakers at bottom, very good. It appears that Pennsylvania back-dated all seizures of loyalist property to July 4, 1776, legitimizing such confiscations to the very birth of the nation.
