SAMUEL FRANCIS SMITH(1808-1895) American clergyman and poet, author of our nation hymn "America" (1832), otherwise known as "My Country 'Tis of Thee". Interesting A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., Newton Center, Nov. 13, 1893, to George Corthall in response to a query for a fair copy of his famous patriot hymn "America". In part: "...Your two letters are at hand...inquiring about a copy of America, with portrait accompanying...I have no knowledge, but your next [door] neighbor Mr. McKendry has, or can get for you the necessary information. The sheet was gotten up, I think...for some sort of School Fair...I thank you for such evidence of appreciation...". Smith was frequently solicited by organizers of Sanitary Fairs and fund-raising bazaars for copies of his poem. Rough top margin, else very good to fine.
Estimate $ 350-450
