SAMUEL D. STURGIS(1822 - 1889) Union brigadier general who assumed Lyon's command in Missouri. He commanded a brigade at South Mountain, Antietam and Fredericksburg. A great prewar manuscript American US cavalry document, "S. D. Sturgis" adding rank, 1p. oblong 8vo., [n. p.] March 24, 1858 in Samuel turns over four Colt Navy revolvers and holsters to future Confederate General George H. (Maryland) Steuart (1828-1903) while their regiment, the 1st US Cavalry, served on the American Plains against hostile Indians. Very good.
