S.C. TREASURER DEFENDS HIS REPUTATION Good content A.L.S. by South Carolina Treasury Secretary Wilmot G. De Sausseure to Gov. Francis W. Pickens, 1p. 4to., Charleston, June 14, 1861 defending himself against a charge of insubordination. In part: "...Col. Locke commanding 1st Regiment Artillery S.C.V. has preferred charges against me for insubordination in ordering the election of Fourth Lieutenants of one of the Artillery Companies which were in the field during the past winter, and it becomes necessary for me to prepare a defence...This matter was reported by myself to your Excellency with a statement of the necessity for it, and you were so good as to express your approval of it, and so instruct me to certify to the Pay rolls of these officers. I desire to use in evidence your approbation...". Very good.
