ROBERT K. RILEYAmerican surgeon who had to undertake the rank of "Acting Volunteer Lieutenant" aboard the U.S. vessel Essex, while serving under Capt. A. M. Pennock. Riley resigned in Feb., 1863, after completing service in the Mississippi squadron. War-date A.L.S. 1p. 4to., aboard the Essex, Feb. 17, 1862, to Capt. (later Admiral) A. M. Pennock, requesting permission to command a tug for two hours because "...Our surgeon is called to Mound see something about our men...I will send him up on it...". Signed with rank. Mounting strip to left margin, overall very good condition. Uncommon, as Riley had a very short career.
