RECONNAISSANCE REPORT FOR BEAUREGARD Fine content war-date D.S. by "L. M. Hatch Cmdg. Party for Guides & Reconnaissance", 5pp. legal folio, [South Carolina, ca. late 1861] to Genl. P. G. T. Beauregard. Hatch prepares a highly-detailed report on the exposure of important South Carolina railroads to attack by Union forces, and how they may be best defended. Hatch opens his report describing natural obstacles to any attack from the coast, but also mentioning how other routes would offer little in the way of natural barriers to attacks on the South Carolina and Savannah railroads. Hatch makes suggestions as to where forces should be located for the best defense of these railroads, such as: "...troops on St. Pauls should not retire directly before an enemy, but remaining to attack his flank and break up his line of communication...". Hatch describes several railroad river crossings and points at which they could be best defended, also suggesting that trees be cut down to block roads, and that booby-trapped bonfires be set. Very good.
Estimate $ 400-600
