Sale 38 Lot 46

RALPH IZARD (1742 - 1804) American military officer who served at Washington's headquarters, instrumental in Greene's appointment to the Southern Army, pledged his large estate to fund the construction of American warships. Scarce A.L.S. as Senator, 3pp., 4to. New York, Oct. 19, 1789, to John Langdon sending news from the Capital. In part: "...The plan at the Treasury is to employ all the clerks that have served in that Office, which is very proper...New York is almost abandoned. The President and Vice President are gratifying New England with their company. The Ministers of France & Spain are on their passage to Europe; and most of the members of Congress are gone home. I most heartily wish I could have done so likewise...The future sessions of Congress ought not to be in the Winter. Let us have an opportunity of paying some little attention to our private affairs...The convulsions in France [the French Revolution] appear to be abated. I most sincerely wish that tranquility may be entirely restored...without more bloodshed. But the revolution has been so extraordinary, that I fear it will not be the case...". Very good.
