RALPH BUNCHE(1904 - 1971) African-American diplomat, Secretary for Political Affairs for the U.N., awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1948 for his efforts to bring peace to Palestine. Excellent archive of 11 T.L.S.'s "Ralph" on United Nations letterhead, 11pp. total, 1963-70, also 4 A.L.S.'s "Ralph", various formats, one each from Somalia and Iran, 1960-70, and a letter dictated by Bunche, 1969, all written to prominent "The Lyon's Den" columnist Leonard Lyons. Some excellent, insightful content, in small part: "...I have to work on a draft resolution on Cyprus tonight - mandatory...Herewith a copy of the first draft of my exercise in sorting out my thoughts on the [1967] riots...the subject grew as I wrote...[From Somalia] My first view of this part of Africa...On 1 July, this will be the third of our Trust Territories to graduate into independence...I have received today by messenger a copy of 'THE NEGROE ALMANAC'. I am happy to have it...Thanks for sending me the photo taken with Marc Chagall...It is a fine souvenir of a memorable visit with him...Many thanks for the copy of 'Black Americans' which I find upon my return to the office. I had not seen it and I am happy to have it. I certainly appreciate your thoughtfulness...On my return from abroad I find your cable extending birthday greetings...the figure 65 is a little frightening to me. I don't feel that old really, at least not in spirit, even if the physical equipment begins to show unmistakable signs of wear and tear...there is no better protection against the encroachments of age than good friends such as you...". In the letter dictated by Bunche, he laments the death of songwriter Frank Loesser, and mentions a mythical island Loesser and Bunche once discussed: "...with no troubles, no politicians or politics, no bigots and no jerks...". Very good.
Estimate $ 600-700
