POLITICAL WARS IN NEW HAMPSHIRE Fine content, politically-charged L.S., 3pp. 4to., Portsmouth, N.H., June 25, 1801 in which Rep. Jonathan S. Shelburne writes to Secretary of State JAMES MADISON. Madison is first congratulated upon his appointment as Secretary of State, before the political situation is set forth. In part: "..It affords high satisfaction to the real friends of our Constitution, leaves no room for the clamours of its most violent opponents...I trust the momentary murmurs of a treacherous and fallen faction will not deter our Government from displaying that energy which its enemies pretended to predict it could want. No state was more insulted by the appointments of the late Administration than New Hampshire. Old Tories and the most embittered federalists, were assiduously sought for and courted into office...This, for a time, gave a tone to the whole State, but the delusion is wearing off...advantages our opponents still derive from having most of the presses, and Post Offices, yet under their influences. These two objects are highly deserving attention...we have established two Republican papers in the State...". Very good.
