Sale 38 Lot 148

PIERRE G. T. BEAUREGARDImportant D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Charleston, Oct. 4, 1862, his pencil endorsement on at the bottom of a telegram received from JOHN H. WINDER (1800 - 1865) Confederate brigadier general and commander of the Confederate Libby Prison, Belle Isle and the notorious prison at Andersonville. The text of Winder's message to Beauregard, on a Southern Telegraph Companies form, reads: "Richmond...Will you please order all prisoners of war in your department to Richmond & telegraph under instructions from the A G office. Jno. H. Winder Brig Genl". At lower left, Beauregard endorses the order in pencil: "Approved G. T. B.". Very good. Undoubtedly, many of these poor prisoners had been captured during the Burnside Expedition a few months earlier, and many more would die in the harsh confines of Libby Prison or on Belle Island.
Estimate $ 700-900
