Sale 38 Lot 147

PIERRE G. T. BEAUREGARD(1818-1893) Confederate major general who initiated the attack on Fort Sumter that started the Civil War. He also led with distinction at First Bull Run, Shiloh, and in the defense of Richmond. Especially rare war-date S.P. "G. T. Beauregard Gen'l Comdg". 2 1/2" x 4 3/8", a fine chest, up pose in uniform, carefully hand-tinted and retouched, signed on the mount beneath the image. Additionally, Beauregard has added on verso: "Charleston S.C. July 9th 1863". Tiny brown spot to the right of signature, else near fine. At this time, Beauregard was actively seeking a field command, but was ordered to remain in Charleston to survey coastal defenses. This was a wise decision: in July through September 1863, land forces under Brig. Gen. Quincy A. Gillmore launched a series of attacks on Fort Wagner on Morris Island and other fortifications at the mouth of Charleston harbor, while Rear Adm. John A. Dahlgren attempted to destroy Fort Sumter. Because the latter operation failed, the successful seizure of Morris Island was not effective in threatening Charleston.
Estimate $ 2,000-3,000
