Sale 38 Lot 244

PHILIP H. SHERIDAN(1831 - 1888) Union major general of cavalry and famous Indian fighter. Sheridan's fighting prowess was evident throughout the war, from Booneville to Chickamauga and the elimination of J.E.B. Stuart at Yellow Tavern. Large, probable war-date S.P. "Phil. H. Sheridan Maj Genl. U.S.A.", an oval image 5" x 7" matted to 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" (sight), bearing a fine, sharp image of Sheridan in uniform from chest, up, signed in black ink at the bottom of the photo. Regrettable, the general used a poor pen, as it apparently "hung-up" twice in the signature, and the owner apparently thought he would "improve" the image by abrading the surface in three tiny areas where ink had been brushed. Nevertheless, the signature is complete and bold, and this piece is otherwise very good to fine. Set in a later ornate frame. Not examined out of frame.
Estimate $ 800-1,200
