PAYING WASHINGTON'S SPY FOR "DELICATE" WORK Fine content manuscript document signed by THOMAS HARTLEY, Colonel of the 6th Pa. Reg. who also commanded an expedition against the Indians in 1778 and was a six-time Representative, 1p. 8vo., "York Town", Dec. 2, 1785, to Stephen Chambers at Lancaster: "...I am under the necessity of drawing upon you for the sum of thirty three Pounds to be paid by you to the Bearer...who is to take it to Philadelphia to perform an engagement of a most delicate nature...". At bottom, the sum is acknowledged as received by Major JOHN CLARK. Clark has served as an aide to Nathaniel Green and had overseen a spy network for Washington during the war. On Dec. 3, 1785 he writes: "I acknowledge to have rec'd on the above order Twenty three pounds". Expertly inlaid, very good. Certainly worthy of research to determine just what "delicate matter" Clark had attended to!
Estimate $ 400-600
