OFFICER PLEDGES ALLEGIANCE TO SOUTH CAROLINA ST. CLAIR DEARING(b. 1830) Confederate Lieut. Colonel of the 25th N.C. Infantry. Fine content A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Memphis, Feb. 19, 1861 to South Carolina Gov. FRANCIS W. PICKENS, in part: "...I have just resigned my commission in the Federal Artillery; - and although the Governor of Georgia has offered me a commission in the service of that State, I respectfully tender my services to the noble State of South Carolina - in whose military service I wish to enter. If persons not born in Carolina can be commissioned in her Army and my offer is deemed acceptable, I can be found in Athens Georgia...". On verso, Pickens dockets and initials the letter, noting: "...we have no vacancy at all. The writer is a Lieut. in U.S. Artillery & high standing...". Very good.
