Sale 38 Lot 388

NORTH CAROLINA CONFEDERATE CONGRESSMAN AND COLONEL'S LOT A good pair of images of Andrew C. Cowles of Hamptonville, North Carolina who was Confederate politician and North Carolina colonel. Born in January 1833, Cowles was a well-respected merchant who lived in Hamptonville, Yadkin County, NC. During the war he served as colonel of the 75th North Carolina state militia and was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives from 1860-1864. Included is a nicely painted oval portrait, measuring 9 1/2" x 7 1/2", of Cowles in its original black walnut frame with a period ink inscription on the verso, reading, in full: "Andrew C. Cowles, Hamptonville, N. Carolina. Taken at Raleigh N. C., Dec. 1870. Age 37 yrs. 11 mos. Watson & Co. Photographers. Height 6 ft. 1 inch weight 190 lbs.". Not examined out of the frame. With a great half-plate tintype of Cowles with eight of his friends, most likely congressman, who are all artistically enhanced by the photographer. Cowles appears seated third from the right. Housed in brass preserver, frame and glass. Minor emulsion loss affects some of the men. Included in the lot is a good postwar, 4to. 5pp., letter written in period ink by Cowles to his wife, "Senate Chamber, N. C., July 5, 1873", concerning family matters and describing life in Raleigh while serving in the senate. The letter's original stamped transmittal cover is also included along with a manuscript, 8vo. 1p., wedding invitation addressed to Cowles' niece. Overall all very good unless otherwise noted.
Estimate $ 500-600
