Sale 38 Lot 179

NATHAN BEDFORD FORREST(1821 - 1877) Confederate lieutenant general of Tennessee cavalry and arguably the greatest cavalry officer in history, he raided and harassed Union forces and supply lines with great effect throughout the war. Fine content manuscript L.S. "N. B. Forrest" as President of the Selma, Marion & Memphis Railroad Company. 1p. 4to., Marion, Al., Oct. 7, 1871 to Col. Wm. R. Hunt in Memphis. In part: "...Enclosed you will find statement of the subscription from Memphis which will explain itself. The cost of carrying the election has well nigh exhausted but Commissions out still we come out ahead. I hope the statement will be satisfactory. The Company has no money, they have lands and Bonds either of which I hope will suit you to take in payment of your a/c. As for the amount of your claim for salary the matter has been referred to the auditing Committee...". Very good. Forrest's railroad did indeed go "bust", though details of its failure are murky.
Estimate $ 3,000-4,000
