MILLEDGE L. BONHAM (1813 - 1890) Confederate brigadier general who commanded troops on Morris Island, at the beginning of the war, and a brigade at First Bull Run. In January, 1863 he resigned to become governor of South Carolina, after which he was reappointed to brigadier general and led a cavalry brigade in the Carolinas. Fine content A.L.S. as Governor on Executive Department letterhead, 2p. 4to., Charleston, Aug. 13, 1863 to Commissioners Trenholm, Porter, Furman and others in Richmond. Writing just nine days before the beginning of the 587-day Federal bombardment of downtown Charleston began, Bonham prepares for the evacuation of the city. In part: "...The State Convention...charged you with the duty of providing for the removal from the city...of persons who be reason of sex, age or infirmity are incapable of taking part in its defense...I now call your attention to the importance, at this juncture, and in view of the late character of the defense to be made of this city, of carrying into effect the intention of the convention...". Text a bit light but fully legible, some negligible marginal chips, else very good.
