MAXIMO GOMEZ
(1836 - 1905) Cuban patriot and general who led insurgents during the revolution of 1868-78, turned his troops over to Americans during their intervention (1895). Superb content A.D.S. in Spanish as Major General of Cuba's Army of Independence, 2pp., 4to., [n.p., n.d. but 1878], detailing plans to raise funds for an invasion of Spanish Cuba, what is now referred to as the 1879 Guerra Chiquita (Little War). In part: "...Assignment of quotas that I have allowed myself to impose to each Center of Emigration already organized with the purpose of securing the amount that I think is indispensable to open the campaign...We could have conserved intact all other funds until the time to use them for purchasing war materials and smuggled goods...". Gomez' list of Cuban emigration and fund-raising centers includes Key West, New Orleans, and New York. Additionally, Gomez mentions the efforts of his second-in-command, Antonio Maceo Grajales, whom the Republic of Cuba leadership sent abroad to collect funds as a means of keeping him out of Spanish grasp. In part: "...General A. Maceo and I have expended all we had from our own savings... To the point of suffering sad humiliations supplicating for favors for Cuba; in one word, we have placed all we possess to the service of Cuba, and we are always ready to fight because we consider that step not only as a simple duty but as a sacred indebtedness of honor...". Boldly signed "Gomez" on verso. Age toned, slight brittleness with chipping along right edge not affecting signature, else very good .
