LEGISLATOR WARNS OF A PROPOSED INVASION OF FLORIDA IN 1820 Intriguing A.L.S. by Congressman J. A. CUTHBERT on the Foreign Relations Committee, 1p. 4to., Washington, March 6, 1820 to Georgia Gov. John Clarke. In the wake of Andrew Jackson's unauthorized pursuit of Indians and their slave allies into Florida during the First Seminole War, Cuthbert offers dramatic intelligence concerning American intentions toward Florida. In part: "...The Committee of Foreign Relations have at length reported a bill to authorize the president to occupy the Floridas and to employ any part of the army or militia which he may think proper. The measure will be opposed, but I have no fear of its failure...". Since the territory then comprising Florida was under Spanish control, such an action would have almost certainly led to war between the United States and Spain, However, apparently Cuthbert underestimated the opposition to such a move, for though Florida was destined to eventually become a part of the U.S., there would be no such attack in 1820. Some slight bleeding to text and toning, else very good.
Estimate $ 200-300
