JOSEPH WHEELER(1836 - 1906) Confederate major general, "Fighting Joe" was a brilliant cavalry officer who raided Rosecrans at Chattanooga and harassed Sherman's army through Georgia and the Carolinas. A.L.S. as Member of Congress, 2pp. 4to., Washington, Feb. 4, 1883, a mournful letter to his wife, in part: "...I did not get your telegram until after day light . I know you are in deep duties and I wish I was with you. I have felt badly all day but I don't know whether it is caused by fearing that you feel very badly. I expected to do a great deal today but I have not done any...except sit in my room and send a letter now & then...I wish I was with you so much that I think how foolish I am to let myself get away from you at all....I spend much time in preparing...amendments to the various sections of the bill...I supposed we will be in the bill this week...". Boldly penned in purple ink on his official letterhead, very good.
