JOHN SEDGWICK(1813 - 1864) Union major general wounded at Antietam and Glendale, fought at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, killed by a sharpshooter while claiming the Confederates wouldn't be able to hit an elephant at such a distance. Rare war-date A.L.S. Major General on Headquarters, 9th Army Corps letterhead, 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], Jan. 28, 1863, in part: "...Your note of the 24th inst is received and if you will call on Mr. W. B. Peck, he can give you the desired information...". Closely trimmed at left, else very good.
