Sale 38 Lot 70

JOHN RANDOLPH (1773 - 1833) "Randolph of Roanoke", American statesman and a vigorous defender of states' rights, he opposed Jefferson's policies, the War of 1812, and the Missouri Compromise. Scarce A.L.S. "J. R. of R." 1p. 4to., "Haw Branch Amelia", Oct. 31, 1827, a ruminative letter to "Harry". In part: "..I got your last letter just before your departure for Clarksburg. I have heard nothing since from Betty...My own health is no better & my spirits are childishly weak. I would not trouble you [with] my querulous egotism but that you requested me to write, & I can write but in one vein, because I cannot control the current of my thoughts. Every day I find myself becoming more misanthropical...I return home today. The circumstances attending my election forbid my resigning my seat or I would do it today. It is Wesley who says that 'They who love you for political services love you less than their dinner, & they who hate you more than the Devil'...". Very good to fine.
Estimate $ 600-800
