JOHN PHILIP HILL (1879-1941) U.S. Congressman from the 3rd Congressional district of Maryland. Fascinating original diary by Hill during 1917 (he then goes to war) and continues in 1919, 368pp., 8vo., Baltimore, MD., hardcover. His daily life was filled with meeting important people, generals, royalty, Col. Teddy Roosevelt, international delegations, joint Chiefs, President Woodrow Wilson, in addition to the significant cases he was working on. A small sample of entries include: "Spent most of the day in letters to Adg. Gen. of U.S., Col Roosevelt, Gen Mann & Gen Wood in conference with Gen Gaither about formation of Volunteer Regiment in Baltimore in Core Volunteers are called for"; "Went to Annapolis with General Gaither & Officers of Maryland National Guard"; "President broke all diplomatic relations with Germany today"; "Dined with Gerry's and went to British Embassy to meet with Prince of Wales"; "With Delegation from MD. Defense League to deliver Universal Military Service to President at Executive Mansion Office = at Executive Office 2:30 'snubbed' by the President who practically? against Service..."; "Went to Washington for Mayor. Saw Acting Secretary of State & handed him the Mayor's invitation. The King and Queen of Belgium to come to Baltimore", and much more. July 18, 1917 through September are blank, when he then picks up again in1919: "Returned from France, Discharged from Army, Resumed Practice today". Very good.
Estimate $ 400-500
