JOHN BROWN(1800 - 1859) American abolitionist who became obsessed with idea of abolishing slavery by force, massacred five slavery adherents at Pottawatomie, seized the arsenal at Harpers Ferry and was hanged for treason. Very rare A.D.S. "John Brown" 1p. oblong 8vo., [n.p.], Dec. 16, 1841, a receipt reading, in full: "Received of O. O. Brown fourteen dollars and twenty nine cents, on two Barrels of damaged Flour, and twenty nine cents to be applied on said O. O. Brown's note in my hands when the price of said Flour shall be agreed uppon [sic]...". Additional folds, very good to fine.
