Sale 38 Lot 9A

(1717 - 1797) British Major General who captured Louisbourg from the French in 1758. Served as Governor General of British North America but left the office due to Pontiac's Rebellion and later served as colonial Governor of Virginia. Late A.L.S. "Amherst" 1p. 4to., "Montreal [House],"[Kent], July 17, 1796, to an unknown correspondent, concerning "Mr. Barrington Bradshaw who was a Captain in the second Regiment of Life Guards and who sold out of the Corps very contrary to my wishes, is at present setting out for the East Indies and has desired I would write a line in his favour [sic]. I comply with Mr. Bradshaw's desire with great pleasure from the very good opinion I have of him in every respect, and from the confidence I entertain of his real merit, that he will prove himself deserving of any favour and protection you man honour [sic] him with..." Docketed in another hand on verso. Toned from prior matting, recipient's name removed at left resulting in a small loss at bottom left, minor chip at top right corner, else very good.
