Sale 38 Lot 34

JAMES HAMILTON(1710-1783) Son of prominent Philadelphia lawyer Andrew Hamilton and several term Governor of Pennsylvania. Partly-printed D.S. 1p. oblong legal folio, Philadelphia, Apr. 11, 1754, a grant from the Penn Family to Thomas Burney and Robert Wright, both of Lancaster County, of 300 acres of land "more or less adjoining Joseph Wilson and Henry Millroy or a branch of Beaver Creek in Pextang Township...", in exchange for "...Fifteen Pounds Ten Shillings...and the Yearly Quit-Rent of One Halfpenny Sterling, for every Acre thereof...". Pextang (or Paxton) Township would become home of the infamous "Paxton Boys", a militia that, in 1763, massacred a group of Christian Indians in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in a rush of fear in the wake of Pontiac's rebellion. They later attempted to march on Philadelphia after the colony arranged to have other "civilized" Indians from Bethlehem protected in the capital. Moderate toning, partial fold separations, marginal wear, else very good.
Estimate $ 300-400
