JAMES C. RICE (1829 - 1864) Union brigadier general who fought at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg where he is credited with securing Little Round Top against a flanking movement, killed at Spotsylvania. Rare war-date A.D.S. "James C. Rice Lieut Col. 44th N.Y.S.V.", 1p. large 8vo., [n.p., n.d.], his letter of recommendation for John A. Raymond attesting to the fact that Raymond is: "...thoroughly acquainted with the principals and executions of the various movements contained in the two volumes of Hardee's Infantry Tactics..." and suggesting that he be commissioned an officer. Folds, else very good.
