JACQUELINE KENNEDYRare T.L.S. "Jacqueline Kennedy" as First Lady on White House letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Apr. 2, 1963 to esteemed decorator Albert Hadley who was assisting the Kennedys in redecorating the White House in part: "...In the new issue of Vogue, there are pictures of a house done by Mrs. Parrish [his associate]. The first page shows a lacy Spanish straw rug -- could you tell me how much the price for this would be...". Folds, pencil notations at bottom (could be erased), else very good. Along with a second unsigned letter from "Mrs. Lincoln Housekeeper" on White House letterhead instructing how statements must be submitted; a note from Jackie's secretary on Jackie's personal memo; two blank Secret Service pass requests; a typed list of missing swatches needed for "President's Office", "President's Bedroom", "Blue Room", etc.; a White House letter from Lady Bird Johnson announcing the permanent establishment of Curator of the White House; a June, 3, 1965 typed request from Mrs. Kennedy returning samples and ordering rugs for her children; letters to Mrs. Johnson, and more. At the time, Mrs. Kennedy was in the process of refurbishing and refurnishing the White House with period furniture. To avoid the politically controversial use of public money for this work, she established the White House Historical Association which would publish the first official White House guidebook (1962). All profits from the sale of the guidebook to the millions who toured the White House would be used to fund the restoration project.
