JACK RUBY CONTRACTS TO WRITE "MY STORY"An important set of contracts and related documents concerning journalist William R. Woodfield's authorship of Jack Ruby's "My Story". Included in this archive is: a signed copy of a T.L.S. by Jack's brother, EARLY RUBY, 1p. 4to., Jan. 6, 1964 indemnifying Woodfield from any "premature disclosure" by Ruby of any "essential facts" to Woodfield in the preparation of the story; two contracts signed by EARL RUBY and Woodfield, each 8pp. 4to., Los Angeles, Dec. 29, 1963 in which Ruby contracts Woodfield to write the story of Jack Ruby and his murder of Oswald, essentially giving Woodfield sole access to Ruby with release of the story on Jan. 28, 1964, Ruby receiving 70% of the sales proceeds and Woodfield receiving the balance, with other conditions applicable if Ruby is acquitted or released on bail. Each page is initialed by each party, and signed in full on the final page. Additionally, each contract is accompanied by a photocopy of a holograph power of attorney issued to Earl by Jack Ruby authorizing him to negotiate the contract. Two pages of Woodfield's holograph notes are present, dated Dec. 6, 1963, in part: "...Mel Belli called around 8 PM to tell me to pack my bags for Dallas...He has assembled psychiatrists, judges & lawyers, & has, of course, been retained by Earl Ruby who has had a change of heart...Life had 250-500,000 gross estimate of movie film but Ruby killing took play from it...". The archive also includes a telegram from Earl Ruby to Woodfield authorizing him to write the story for 25% of the gross, Ruby's and Woodfield's escrow instructions, 2pp. 4to., Dec. 30, 1963, signed by both, receipts and check stubs for payments made to both parties, and a recap of Woodfield's expenses in researching the story. Overall very good.
Estimate $ 1,000-1,500
