ISRAEL PUTNAM (1718 - 1790) American Revolution major general engaged at Bunker Hill, in command at New York before Washington's arrival, and during the defeat at Long Island. Later led in Philadelphia and in the Hudson region. Rare war-date manuscript L.S. "Israel Putnam", as Commander at Princeton, with the text penned by Army Major and aide-de-camp AARON BURR, 1p., folio, Princeton, Mar. 11, 1777, addressed on the verso to Major John Taylor. The letter expresses concern over the loss of property suffered by an individual as a result of wartime hostilities, in part: "...I am much pleased with the behavior of Mr. Zuzany and his Party...I have directed that Mr. Zuzany and his Party should receive from the Claimant of the Cattle which he took, one third of the real value of said Cattle which at a moderate Computation, I have stated at 24-00 pounds. It is doubtless the Duty of every good citizen to protect and respect the Property of his Neighbors...". Putnam's letters are very scarce and autograph material of Burr during the Revolutionary War is rare. An good military letter combining the two autographs. Light folds, trivial stains, else very good.
