ISAAC INGALLS STEVENS(1818 - 1862) Union major general and western explorer, fought with distinction at Port Royal, Secessionville and Second Bull Run; killed in an engagement at Chantilly. Scarce A.L.S. "I. I. Stevens", 1p. 8vo., Washington, Oct. 11, 1852 to Prof. James Henry. In part: "...Lieut. Montgomery Hunt U.S. navy is very desirous to be appointed the inspector of the New York Light House District..[he has] manifested great interest in the reform of the Light House System and has I am persuaded taken great pains to inform himself thoroughly...The facts which he has been unable to communicate to the gentlemen of Congress no doubt had their influence in bringing about the recent reform..." Very good to fine. Stevens at the time was assistant in charge of the Coast Survey Office in Washington.
