IGNAZ MOSCHELES(1794 - 1870) Austrian Jewish composer and pianist, one of the most popular teachers in Vienna and on friendly terms with Meyerbeer, Hummel, and Beethoven, the pianoforte arrangement of whose opera "Fidelio" he assisted in preparing. Scarce A.L.S. "I. Moscheles" 2pp. 4to., Leipzig, Jan. 13, 1870, a very late letter in German to his aunt, Madame F. Lehmann, wife of the noted literary translator Emil Lehmann. In part: "...I am already recovering!...[but] to make music or to listen to it is not yet possible because of my sensitive nerves. Recently I had pleasant surprise: the pianist Drisch (a very able artist) who, with his wife (a well-educated American, friend of Sebastian's wife)...came for an afternoon visit. Our Clara happened to arrive also and D. and C. sat down at the piano and played, four-handed, from my Choral pieces 'Family Life'. It all fitted together beautifully...". Moscheles would never recover from his illness, dying just two months later on March 13, 1870. Very good condition.
