Sale 38 Lot 376

An excellent, original war-date signed pen, ink and wash drawing, 16 1/2" x 12 1/2" (sight), captioned at bottom: "MARCHING ORDERS", depicting a group of Union soldiers breaking camp. This exceedingly well-executed drawing shows soldiers in the foreground rolling up their bedrolls, filling canteens, and folding tents, with a young drummer boy at center, while in the background others are loading at wagon with supplies. The drawing is signed and dated at bottom: "J. B. Geyser 1863". Very fine condition, beautifully matted and framed in an ornate gilt wood frame. Pvt. John B. Geyser served with the 7th Penn. Infantry, the U.S. Corps of Engineers, and the 9th Veteran Reserve Corps. Without exaggeration, this is simply the finest war-date (or otherwise) soldier's drawing we've seen, as good as any Homer that appeared in Harper's! Not examined out of frame.
Estimate $ 2,000-3,000
