HEZEKIAH NILES(1777 - 1839) American editor and author. A.L.S. 1p. legal folio, Baltimore, July 1, 1811, to the Reverend William Bentley, founding editor of the Essex Register to ask for Bentley's aid in launching his new journal, the Niles Weekly Register. In part: "...I frankly make of you the following requests, as my work cannot, in any manner interfere with your excellent paper 1. That you will give the perspectus [sic] two insertions in the Essex Register...". Bentley, a Harvard-educated Unitarian minister from Salem, and his Essex Register held a wide New England circulation, and Niles could not hope to launch his own weekly without Bentley's help. The Niles Weekly Register did eventually gain traction, having grown into one of the most prestigious and highest-circulating journals in the United States by 1836. Minor folds, stains on the left margin, else very good.
